COP29: A Milestone in Global Climate Action

COP29: A Milestone in Global Climate Action
GarciaYbrahim

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) concluded in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking a significant milestone in the global effort to combat climate change. This year's conference emphasized transparency, international cooperation, and financial commitments essential for global climate resilience.

Main Contents of COP29

  • Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF):
A significant achievement at COP29 was the submission of the first Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) by countries, promoting greater accountability in how nations report their progress on emissions reductions and climate commitments.
  • Climate Finance Commitments:
The conference prioritized increasing financial support to developing nations. Negotiations aimed to expand the Green Climate Fund beyond its previous target of $100 billion per year, acknowledging the need for up to $2.4 trillion annually to achieve global climate resilience and transition to renewable energy.
  • Revision of National Pledges (NDCs):
Delegates urged countries to submit more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in 2025 to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. Current projections suggest global temperatures could rise by 2.5°C to 2.9°C unless drastic action is taken.
  • Focus on Climate Resilience and Adaptation:
Special attention was given to supporting the Global South in climate adaptation strategies, recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on these regions. This included discussions on renewable energy projects and combating deforestation.

The final agreement reached at COP29

At COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, delegates reached a landmark agreement focusing on climate finance for developing nations.

Triple finance to developing countries, from the previous goal of USD 100 billion annually, to USD 300 billion annually by 2035.

Secure efforts of all actors to work together to scale up finance to developing countries, from public and private sources, to the amount of USD 1.3 trillion per year by 2035.

A significant achievement at COP29 was the finalization of the framework for carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This allows for country-to-country trading of carbon credits and includes safeguards for environmental integrity and human rights. Transparency in climate reporting also advanced, with progress in the Enhanced Transparency Framework, ensuring better climate policy development and monitoring in the coming years.
